The Place I Am Not - Exhibition Catalogue
£15.00
This catalogue has been produced in conjunction with the exhibition The Place I Am Not held at the Freud Museum London, 25 September - 20 October 2024 and The Hellenic Centre, 2 October - 21 October.
The Place I Am Not is a project displayed simoultaneously at the Freud Museum and at The Hellenic Centre in London in October 2024. The exhibition reflects on the life of Sigmund Freud in London as an immigrant in the process of creating a 'home away from home', in a place where he never felt he really, truly belonged. The diasporic element plays a central role in the artistic practice of Loizidou who engages in an open dialogue with spaces, objects and stories that have been transitory elements of hybridity in one's identity formation.
The collaboration of the two places brings together various ideas about fragmented identities, emotional traumas and diasporic identities that emerge through the art works exhibited at both sites. The Place I Am Not acts as a project seeking to unpack what is the truly elusive idea of a home, what it means to be an immigrant, how immigrants feel a sense of belonging, how people of the diaspora form their sense of identity and create protective/safe spaces to exist, and how environments, spaces, places, and objects interact and affect our ways of being.
