Exclusive to the Freud Museum, a unique replica of the Marble Head of a Woman ( Greek, Classical period, 5th century BC, Pentelic Marble ) from Sigmund Freud's collection.
This striking marble head was part of a larger piece of sculpture, likely an Athenian grave relief. These usually depict the deceased and one or two mourners. It has not been determined which of the two this woman may be. During his visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens on 5 September 1904, Freud would have come across many examples of such reliefs.
The replica of Freud’s Head of a Woman from a Relief is cast in white marble jesmonite.
