Sphinx - Print by Huiping Yang

£30.00

Limited edition print of the famous sphinx which resides in Freud's famous study.

The sphinx became a major symbol in the oeuvre of Sigmund Freud as it is crucial in the mythical story of Oedipus. In the tale, the sphinx stopped Oedipus in his tracks and asks him to solve a riddle: What walks on two legs in the morning, three legs in the afternoon and four legs at night? If he failed, the sphinx threatened to eat him. But Oedipus answers correctly: Man.

The sphinx - the hybrid of animal and woman - represents femininity and sexuality in Greek mythology.
