Vienna 1900 Playing Cards

The phenomenon of game playing is an essential characteristic of human societies, a symbol of how shared  activity can lead to mutual enjoyment. Freud’s game of choice was a card game called Tarok which he played weekly with a group of friends.

These playing cards come adorned with photographs of some important figures from turn-of-the-century Vienna, including Sigmund Freud, Alma Mahler-Werfel, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
