Surrealism & the Occult - Nadia Choucha

£10.99

Author, Nadia Choucha will be giving a talk at the Freud Museum on Magic, Myth & Madness on Halloween 2018.

In Surrealism & the Occult, Nadia Choucha explores the art, theories and activities of the Surrealists, one of the most influential and pervasive artistic movements of the twentieth-century, to discover how it was permeated with esoteric ideas and images, much of which came from the nineteenth-century occult revival in French, as well as the Symbolist art movement which drew upon this revival.

The manifestos of André Breton, the main theorist and leader of the Surrealists, are infused with the magical theories of Éliphas Lévi or the occult-inspired poetry and prose of Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Lautréamont. These manifestoes guided and inspired the work of artists like Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí and others who drew extensively upon ideas and imagery from alchemy, shamanism, gnosticism and various other traditions to produce work that was deeply radical and unsettling in the way it questions ad undermines our view of the world.

Now in a new revised edition, Surrealism & the Occult is an essential work for those interested in understanding more about the relationship between occult theory and artistic practice, and how the symbols of the past can be unlocked to yield meaning and significance which still resonate today.

Nadia Choucha grew up in the Middle East and Scotland, and has a degree in History of Art from Edinburgh University and a Master's degree in Digital Humanities from King's College, University of London. She in base din London where she currently works as an editor and digital strategist for an academic research organisation.
