Doves are typically known as bringers of peace and joy, but for Ida Applebroog, birds are vessels for expression.
The Freud Museum's 2020 exhibition, Ida Applebroog: Mercy Hospital features artworks from her Angry Birds of America series. Feminist artist, Ida Applebroog was an avid collector of taxidermy birds and created numerous paintings of American birds in bright washes of colour. Her Angry Birds of America pieces were created against the backdrop of Donald Trump's election campaign and early presidency, in 2016-17. The artist herself acknowledges:
"I realised I was in the middle of the Trump era. There was a lot of anger, not just me, but all over America. My feeling was, whatever I was doing, it had to do with angry, dead birds."
